Children’s Technology Development Fund Turns Two Years Old
Children’s Technology Development Fund (TDF) kicks off its second funding cycle today. The Fund, created in March of 2009 and managed by the Technology and Innovation Development Office (TIDO), was started to advance Children’s clinicians and researchers' promising technologies and support their translation into new devices, diagnostic tests and therapeutics that can benefit our patients and the broader public. In addition to providing financial support to selected projects, TDF provides access to an external advisory board of industry experts in product development and a network of preferred contract research organizations (CROs) with the expertise necessary to execute the specific project plans.
In 2009, BCH committed $1.2 million to support 11 hospital innovations across a range of areas including new vaccine technology, novel targets for cancer therapeutics, a diagnostic test for appendicitis, a pediatric vision scanner, tissue engineering and exciting new treatments for type II diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. Each project selected is paired with a member of the advisory board who serves as a mentor—providing TIDO and the investigator feedback throughout the course of the project.
In 2010, The TDF will continue to offer two different funding levels ($50,000 and $150,000) based on the current stage of development of the technology. To apply for funding from the Technology Development Fund, applicants must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) to TIDO.
The LOI to TIDO is due by April 5, 2010.
TIDO reviews all LOIs to make sure they meet the submission criteria and then selected applicants will be contacted by May 3 and invited to submit full proposals by June 2. All selected applicants will be asked to give a 15 minute presentation of their proposed project to the advisory board during the last week of June.
